How a Hydraulic Vane Pump Works
Written by Camilo H Rueda
HYDRAULIC vane
pump consists of a slotted rotor revolving inside a
chamber formed by an oval ring
that serves as a Track to the blades or vanes that go inside the rotor slots, moving in and out with the motion of the shaft, and the plates of
pressure, one of which is the inlet
port and the other the outlet on the opposite, as shown in Fig.
Hydraulic pumps, in general are driven at high speed (> 600 RPM) therefore the vanes are pushed out by centrifugal
force, but it is not enough, to pump at high pressure the vanes are pressurized in the opposite side also.

The spaces defined between the ring, the rotor the vanes and the side plates are called pumping chambers. These chambers are changing in
volume as the rotor rotates driven by the shaft. When the vanes are most out, the volume is greater than when they are in the rotor.
