The hydraulic press

Articles - Education

Hydraulic PressAs we announced in the previous edition, we will take a look to another very common hydraulic machine in our environment. The hydraulic press.

This time we are studying the hydraulic press that uses heat and time to form a piece.

This machine has a big diameter single acting main Glossary Link piston. The press has two pulling cylinders and two auxiliary cylinders, one is the the ejector and the other to change the mold.

The master Glossary Link cylinder is pulled by the assistants to achieve a rapid aproche without using a very high Glossary Link flow. While moving the main cylinder sucks oil from the tank directly through a pre-fill Glossary Link valve.

Once it reaches the end of the working Glossary Link stroke, the electrical sequence changes and all the Glossary Link pressure is sent to the main piston that now, is capable of developing maximum closing Glossary Link force.

Schematics for a hydraulic press

For analysis purposes, the circuit can be separated by groups as shown in the diagram.

1. Glossary Link Pump Group (pump, Glossary Link relief valve and vent valve).

2. High pressure Glossary Link Directional valve cylinder Group ( Glossary Link sequence valve, prefill valve and flow Glossary Link control)

3. Pull Cylinders Group (directional valve and flow Glossary Link control).

3. Change Mold Group (mold cylinder, two-speed directional valves and flow controls).

This distribution helps us for the purpose of maintenance troubleshooting as we can separate the function in four groups.

The Group #1 is the supply for the other 3. It is in charge of sending flow and pressure. A failure in this Group affects all 3.
